Growing Together: Life at Green River Alliance Church

The Beginning - things are not as they seem

Have you ever bought something online, waited a week for it to arrive, and then opened the box only to realize it looks absolutely nothing like the picture? Maybe it’s a "some assembly required" bookshelf that looks like a pile of firewood, or a "one size fits all" shirt that wouldn't fit a toddler.

Beginnings are weird like that. They are often deceptive.

In our culture, we love a good "finished product." We like the reveal at the end of the home renovation show where the house looks perfect. We like the championship trophy. We like the "happily ever after." But the beginning? The beginning is usually messy, confusing, and, honestly, a little bit misleading.

If you’re sitting at home today, looking at your life and thinking, "This is not what I expected," I have some good news for you.

You are in great company.

In fact, you’re right in the middle of how God usually works.

Things are rarely as they seem at the start. Because real life starts messy. And confusing. And way more “in progress” than we’d like to admit.

Whether you’ve been around church for years or you’re just now testing the waters, this core truth is for you:

Beginnings can be misleading. But God isn’t.

1) The First Pages Can Fool You

Let’s go back to the literal beginning.

Genesis.

In the Garden, everything looked perfect. Beautiful. Simple. Safe.

And then comes that moment with the tree.

The Bible says the fruit looked “good for food” and “pleasant to the eyes.” (Genesis 3:6)

In other words, it didn’t look like rebellion.

It didn’t look like death.

It looked like an upgrade.

That’s the thing about so much of life. The start doesn’t come with warning labels. The packaging looks fine. The picture on the box looks right. But underneath? Something else is going on.

And if you’ve ever said, “How did I end up here?”—yeah. You’re not weird. You’re human.

But here’s where the hope shows up: God meets us in the messy beginning… and He doesn’t leave us there.

Don’t Despise the Small Stuff

If you’ve ever walked into Green River Alliance Church, you know we aren't about flashy productions or pretending we have it all together. We are about Real Community, Real Truth, and Real Hope. Sometimes, "real" looks a little small.

There’s a verse in the book of Zechariah (4:10) that asks a great question: "Who dares despise the day of small things?"

Back then, the people were rebuilding the temple. It wasn't nearly as big or fancy as the old one. To the people watching, it looked pathetic. It looked like a failure before it even started. But God was saying, "Don't judge the finish by the start."

Maybe you feel like your spiritual life is in a "day of small things." Maybe you feel like your faith is just a tiny spark, or your marriage is just a pile of rubble. It’s easy to look at that and give up. But in God’s kingdom, small beginnings are His specialty.

If you are looking for a church in green river wy where you don't have to be perfect to start, that’s us. We believe that God takes the small, the broken, and the "not much to look at" and does something miraculous. We see it every week in our small groups. People show up with just a little bit of hope, and Jesus meets them there.

The Beautiful Plot Twists

The Bible is basically a collection of stories where the beginning looked one way… and God was doing something totally different.

Take Joseph.

The start of his story looks like betrayal and loss. Sold by his brothers. Thrown in prison. Forgotten. (Genesis 37–40)

If you stopped the story there, you’d call it a tragedy.

But God was setting the table for redemption. What looked like a dead end was actually the road to saving people.

Or look at Saul of Tarsus.

If you met him at the beginning, you’d think, “This guy is the enemy.” And honestly, you’d be right. He was hunting Christians. (Acts 9)

Then Jesus knocks him flat.

Blind. Dependent. Quiet.

It looked like Saul’s life ended.

But it was the beginning of Paul—the guy who would carry the gospel farther than he ever imagined.

Even Peter… whew.

Big talk. Quick temper. Public failure. He flat-out denies Jesus. (Luke 22:54–62)

If we’re honest, the beginning of Peter’s story looks like the kind of guy you don’t put in charge of anything.

But Jesus doesn’t label us by our rough starts. He remakes people.

That’s the kind of stuff we keep coming back to in “The Beginning.” Because if God can work with their beginnings, He can work with ours too.

The Ultimate "Things Are Not As They Seem" Moment

If we’re going to talk about beginnings and endings, we have to talk about Jesus.

If you had been standing at the foot of the cross two thousand years ago, you wouldn't have seen a victory. You would have seen a man dying a criminal's death. You would have seen shame, blood, and a cold stone tomb. To the naked eye, it looked like the end of the story. The disciples thought it was over. They went back to their fishing boats. They hid in locked rooms.

But three days later, that "end" became the greatest "beginning" in history.

The resurrection of Jesus is the ultimate proof that things are not as they seem. Death wasn't the end; it was the beginning of eternal life for everyone who believes. The cross wasn't a defeat; it was the victory that paid for our sins.

At Green River Alliance Church, Jesus is the center of everything we do. We aren't just a social club or a place to learn "good morals." We are a community built on the reality that Jesus is alive and He is still in the business of new beginnings. Whether you are looking for a sunday service to explore these truths or a youth group where your kids can learn about a God who loves them, it all comes back to Jesus.

Your Story Isn't Over

I want to speak directly to those of you in Green River who feel stuck. Maybe you’ve been hurt by religion in the past, or maybe you’re looking for**** a church because you just moved to town and feel lonely.

Whatever brought you here, know this: Your current circumstances are not the final word on your life.

It might look like a mess right now. It might look like a "small thing." It might even look like a failure. But with Jesus, the beginning is just the setup for what He wants to do next. He is the expert at taking the "weird" and the "plain" and making it sacred.

We invite you to come as you are. You don’t need to have the "finished product" version of your life ready to show off. We are a part of the Christian and Missionary Alliance, which means we are a christian church focused on the mission of Jesus: reaching people with the Real Hope that only He can provide.

Join the Community

If you’re wondering where to start, we’ll keep it simple. Start where beginnings start: with Jesus… and with people who will walk with you.

  1. Sunday Service: Join us at 10:45 AM. We’ll be opening Scripture together and tracking through the book of Genesis.

  2. Small Groups: This is where real community happens—real stories, real prayer, real growth.

  3. Bible Studies: Check out our Flourish Women’s Bible Study or our Men’s Bible Study.

  4. Kids: We have an amazing Spark Kids Ministry for the younger generation.

Don't let the "beginning" of your journey with God scare you off just because it feels small or a little bit messy. Come hang out with us at Green River Alliance Church. Let's see what Jesus wants to do with your story. Because, as we’ve learned, things are usually much better than they seem when He is in control.

Thanks for reading. We hope to see you soon!
